AUSTRAL BRICKS WINS GREEN GLOBE AWARD FOR SWITCH TO RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE

Wednesday October 21, 2015

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies has congratulated Austral Bricks in Horsley Park for winning a prestigious Green Globe Award.

Environment Minister Mark Speakman announced this year’s Green Globe Awards winners, which celebrate environmental excellence, leadership and innovation, at a gala ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW, on Thursday 15 October.

Ms Davies praised Austral Bricks for winning the Energy Efficiency category for switching to renewable energy source for its brick ovens.

Austral Bricks has switched from using natural gas, a fossil fuel, to landfill gas, a renewable energy source, to fire the high temperature brick ovens which made the bricks.

“Using renewable fuel and redesigning the high temperature brick ovens saves 12,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions a year,” Ms Davies said.

“The plant is also helping to reduce Australia’s growing waste management problem by creating energy from landfill gas.”

Mr Speakman congratulated this year’s 21 winners for their role in leading sustainable development across the economy and community.

An independent panel of leading environmental experts helped select this year’s winners. The awards are considered the leading environmental awards in NSW and have been running for 16 years.
