Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP visited Anglicare at St Marys today to promote National Op Shop Week, an initiative of Australian charity, Do Something!

Mrs Davies visited the shop on Queen Street to encourage people to donate clothes to their local op shop.

"More and more Australians are turning to op shops to buy clothing and other items, but at the same time op shops are experiencing a decline in donations"

"With Spring coming up, Do Something! are encouraging people to spring clean their homes and give good quality clothing to charity op shops" Mrs Davies said.

Do Something! founder Jon Dee said that giving clothes in not just a great way to help out the community.

"Having a spring clean for charity is a great way to clean up our cupboards and do something good. Donating and reusing clothes is an easy way to help the environment" Mr Dee said.

For information on your local op shops, visit www.opshopweek.com.au.

Op Shop tips:

  • Clothing should be clean, undamaged and reasonably wrinkle-free.
  • Items that come in pairs, such as shoes should be kept together
  • Call your local op shop first to make sure that they want what your giving them, each op shop has their own system for dealing with donations. Some will pick up furniture.
  • Never use a charity bin as a dump! Cleaning up and disposing of material dumped at charity bins is a huge financial burden for charities that are trying to help the most vulnerable people in our community.
