Member for Mulgoa, Mrs Tanya Davies MP is encouraging families to celebrate NSW Grandparents Day on Sunday, 27 October 2013.
Since its introduction in 2011 by NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell, grandparents in NSW are now honoured with their own special day, the last Sunday in October.
“This is an opportunity to recognise all the hard work grandparents do for their families. Grandparents are often the unsung heroes in our community, and it’s only appropriate that they are recognised with a day in their honour.” Mrs Davies said.
Mrs Davies is also encouraging people to nominate a grandparent they know to receive a NSW Grandparent of the Year Award. There are three categories of awards:
Grandparent Carer of the Year - for an outstanding grandparent you know who is also the primary carer of their grandchild/ren.
Community Grandparent of the Year - for a grandparent you know who has made an exceptional contribution by volunteering their time to activities that support their community or their grandchild/ren.
Grand Friend of the Year - for a senior member/elder in a community who is involved in activities in which they play a ‘mentor’ role to younger people in the community. This person doesn’t need to be a grandparent, rather someone who has had an impact on your life, or the life of younger people you know.
“The role of grandparents are now more varied and diverse than ever before, with an increasing number acting as full-time carers for loved ones,” Mrs Davies said.
“Grandparents have an invaluable role in families, enriching the lives of their grandchildren and other children in the community by providing care, mentoring and stability.”
“I hope families can take the time to organise something special for their grandparents on the 27th of October,” Mrs Davies said.
The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that the community views its older citizens in a positive light and recognises their capacity for independence.
“NSW Grandparents Day will be just one way in which we strive to achieve that aim.”
Nominations for the Grandparent of the Year are now open and will close on Friday 4 October 2013. For more information visit the Grandparents Day website at www.grandparentsday.org.au.
