Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, made a surprise visit to St Marys Vietnam Veterans early morning BBQ staged at “The Train” outside the St Marys RSL Club to congratulate and present Sam Vecchio of St Clair with a NSW Government Community Service Award.
“I am delighted to present Sam with this award in recognition of his tireless voluntary work, dedicating a large portion of his personal life supporting ex-servicemen with Department of Veterans Affairs administrative assistance” Tanya Davies said.
Sam has been a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, St Mary’s Outpost Sub-Branch Inc. for a number of years and was elected to their committee as Secretary in 2013.
Sam said he was very humbled to receive this award and was only doing what he thought was the right thing to do to help his fellow veterans.
Sam manages a team of volunteers and administers the daily operation of “The Train”, an antique restored train carriage which functions as an office and gathering place providing administrative, welfare and pension support to local ex-servicemen.
Sam is an excellent administrator and organiser and since taking over as Secretary, Sam has improved the way the Association supports its client and membership base of around 260 ex-servicemen.
This year Sam took on the additional responsibility of organising almost single-handedly the Association’s Christmas party providing gifts and catering for around 150 children and grandchildren of local ex-servicemen; a task performed in the past by a team of volunteers. This year’s event was hailed as the best the Association had organised in many years; just another example of Sam’s excellent ability to organise and implement with a minimum of fuss and outlay.
“Sam is a role model volunteer in his local community displaying unwavering dedication and personal sacrifice to support his fellow ex-servicemen and I commend him for achieving this State Community Service Award recognition” Tanya Davies said.
