Parliamentary Secretary and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies yesterday awarded 66 scholarships to students from social housing across South Western Sydney to support them as they complete their HSC or TAFE equivalent.
Speaking at the awards ceremony held at Western Suburbs Leagues Club on 10 June 2015, Tanya Davies said the recipients were among 200 students living in social housing across NSW that were awarded Youth Scholarships in 2015.
“In their scholarship application, each of these students demonstrated a strong commitment to completing their secondary education,” Tanya Davies said.
These scholarships will provide the extra support students need to overcome the financial hurdles that may prevent them from finishing year 12, or equivalent.
The student’s school or TAFE will manage the scholarships and apply the funds to educational supports such as computer equipment, text books, course materials or tutoring.
This is the ninth year the Youth Scholarships have been awarded, with many past recipients going on to University and TAFE after completing their HSC.
“The scholarships provide young people with a platform to achieve their full potential and give them the opportunity to have a brighter, more secure future,” Tanya Davies said.
One of the scholarship recipients – who lives with relatives and travels more than an hour each way to school – said that despite working part-time to help with expenses at home, there is often little money left over for school expenses.
“I am grateful for the extra support for my school expenses as I am aiming to be the first in my family to finish Year 12 and go to University,” the recipient said, “I hope that by completing my studies and going on to university, I will be able to give back to the next generation of students and help them to complete their education and achieve their goals.”
The scholarships will mean that awardees can purchase textbooks, study guides and computer software that will assist their studies and help them to secure the ATAR needed to accomplish their aspirations.
